Needlepoint Exhibition

We at the Faringdon Arts Festival are delighted to announce the latest addition to the Festival exhibition line up. A generous Festival patron has volunteered to exhibit her collection of historic needlepoint artefacts, including: cross stitch; tapestry and quilting dating back to 1812; ivory bobbins; and WWI love hearts sent back home as Valentines cards from soldiers overseas.

Venue to be decided, but as with all Festival events, it will of course be within the environs of Faringdon itself.

Don't miss your chance to view this cross section of needlework history, displayed throughout the duration of the Festival!

The Folly Newspaper has reported that this will be a major event now - Not just Needlepoint - it is now going to feature all aspects of the textile arts from samplers & quilts to antique needlework tools!

A real 1st for Faringdon....with the exciting addition of the outstanding Clarice Blakey Collection of Antique Needlework Tools. This collection has never been viewed in public before and with other promised privately owned exhibits this will now be a world class exhibition of over 1000 items.

HOWEVER you cannot just lay out valuable antique needlecases, workboxes, pincushions, tape measures, workboxes, scissors, beaded bags, and tunbridgeware on any old table - it needs to be protected from sticky fingers both actual and literal as some of these items date back to the 17th Century! The Festival Committe is now DESPERATE for display cases and cabinets to display these items - the sort of thing they are looking for is glass topped shop counters or old fashioned china display cabinets or sloping table top boxes - (the sort of thing that collectors use or that you see at Antique Fairs).

You might even work for a local company that does commercial exhibitions and has display cabinets etc that they could lend the Festival for a few days...

+ We also need anyone who could turn their carpentry or DIY skills to either make or convert some donated items to be secure but easily viewable by the visitors.

One Idea that was suggested was to turn old unwanted chests of drawers into glass or perspex topped counters so you could get a close up look at the exhibits.

Another need will be some velvet to line display boxes etc - so before you check out those old curtains - let us know!

If you have a large estate car or van that could help us in the futurue to collect/move any donated items or e bay/junk shop finds that might also be needed.

Lastly if you have any storage facilities available this will definitely be needed as we start to collect the display cases etc.

The Folly has published a contact no 0845 859 1720 if you can help - Thanks

We have got a Venue!!!!!! The exhibition will now be held at the Masons Hall in Gloucester Street with the kind permission of the Freemasons. This is an outstanding historic building which will really compliment the items on display... Now more please for help - don't chuck out those old picture frames no matter how awful the picture - we still have nearly 100 needlework samplers to frame all shapes and sizes rectangular and square ... 0845 859 1720 if you can help - Thanks

Re the need for display cases:
The Ashmolean Museum gave some of its old display cases away to other Oxfordshire museums recently and as many of its exhibits are under wraps as the building is being transformed have you thought about approaching the curators there for a loan?
Good luck!
